Jo Yield Parry

Reference: Jo

The Jo Yield Parry is a basic Japanese Jo fighting technique that is taught in Aikido. It is neither an Aikido nor a Kuta technique.

Movie of Jo Yield Parry.

Fig. 1 Start Fig. 2 Strike

  1. Fig. 1 shows the start. Uke and Nage are far enough that their Jos do not quite reach.
  2. Fig. 2 shows Uke stepping forward and striking at Nage with a Jo Yokomen Uchi. Nage responds by stepping back and Nage's Jo coming up to strike the incoming blow. Nage could also do this with a Jo Pull Parry.

Fig. 3 Yield Fig. 4 Counter Strike

  3. In Fig. 3 Nage yields rather than striking Uke's Jo and redirects Uke's Jo above Nage's head. At this point Nage has protection by redirecting Uke's Jo and by stepping back.
  4. Fig. 4 shows Nage's counter strike to Uke's head. The Jo circles Nage's head like a normal Jo Yokomen Uchi except that Nage does not change hands and much of the power and speed of the counter strike comes from Uke striking Nage's Jo.
