Figure Four

Example 1, Figure Four Ikkyo.

Movie of Figure Four Ikkyo.

Fig. 1 Ikkyo Fig. 2 Figure Four Grip Fig. 3 Circle Up Fig. 4 Circle Down

  1. Fig. 1 shows the start with Uke in Ikkyo. From here Figure Four is executed.
  2. In Fig. 2 Nage has just shifted to the Figure Four grip. Nage's left arm has crossed over Uke's arm and reached back under Uke's forearm so that Nage's left hand has grabbed Nage's right wrist. Nage's right hand is still holding Uke's right wrist in the Ikkyo grip which is the same as Figure Four.
  3. Fig. 3 shows Nage standing Up and rotating counterclockwise as seen from above. Nage keeps the same grip through out all of the pictures.
  4. In Fig. 4 Nage continues to rotate counterclockwise and bend forward throwing Uke. Nage must be careful not to break Uke's arm. This can be anxiety producing for Uke.

5. In Fig. 5 Nage maintains the same Figure Four grip and walks around Uke's head turning Uke on Uke's side for the pin.
6. Fig. 6 shows Uke face down for Nage to pin as needed.

Example 2, Figure Four Tenshim.

Movie of Figure Four Tenshim.

Fig. 7 Start Fig. 8 Punch Fig. 9 Figure Four Grip Fig. 10 Throw

  1. Fig. 7 shows the start with Uke and Nage spaced so that their extended lead arms do not quite touch.
  2. Fig. 8 shows Nage stepping in as Uke strikes. Nage's right hand punches Uke in the face and Nage's left hand parries Uke's wrist.
  3. In Fig. 9 Nage has just finished the 1st Tenshim Step and shifted to the Figure Four grip. Nage's right arm has crossed under Uke's arm and reached back up so that Nage's right hand has grabbed Uke's right wrist. Nage's left hand is assisting Nage's right hand in controlling Uke's arm.
  4. In Fig. 10 Nage steps back in the 2nd Tenshim Step throwing Uke. Nage must be careful not to break Uke's arm. This can be anxiety producing for Uke. The turn over and pin is the same as Example 1.

The Figure Four throw gives a highly supercharged Tenshim.
