  1. Fig. 1 shows the start with Nage's right arm extended so that Uke can grab the wrist for the purpose of this exercise. Nage's hand is palm up.
  2. Fig. 2 shows Uke grabbing Nage's wrist and pulling Nage in for the stab. Nage is already starting the Ikkyo.
  3. Fig. 3 shows Nage's hand circling up on the outside of Uke's left arm. This turns Uke away from Nage making the stab difficult.
  4. In Fig. 4 Nage has taken the 1st Irimi step. Nage has continued the circle bringing Uke's hand down. Nage's left hand has grabbed Uke's left wrist.

5. In Fig. 5 Nage's right hand has grabbed above Uke's left elbow to complete the Ikkyo grip. Nage has completed the 2nd Irimi step and Uke's knife hand is on the mat.

  1. Fig. 6 shows the start with Nage's and Uke spaced so that their extended lead arms do not quite touch.
  2. Fig. 7 shows Uke grabbing Nage's wrist. Nage is already moving in and Nage has started the Ikkyo. Nage's wrist is offered with the palm up.
  3. Fig. 8 shows Nage's right hand circling up on the outside of Uke's left arm. This has turned Uke away making it difficult for Uke to stab Nage. Nage's left hand is available to defend against the Tanto if needed.
  4. Fig. 9 shows the end of the 1st Tenkan Step. Nage has continued to circle Uke's right arm down and Nage's left hand has grabbed Uke's left wrist.

5. In Fig. 10 Nage's right hand has grabbed above Uke's left elbow to complete the Ikkyo grip. Nage has completed the 2nd Tenkan Step and the Tornado Twist. Uke's knife hand is on the mat.
