Tanto Grab And Stab

One standard approach to knife fighting is to grab the person you are attacking and pull the person in for the stab. Because I have trained with several of these people I know they are common enough to be important. Having trained with people who are good at grabbing I know that I cannot always avoid being grabbed. For this reason it is important to learn how to deal with grab and stab even though it is a very difficult problem.

Grab and stab can start with Katate Tori Ai Hammi or Katate Tori Gyaku Gamae. Katate Tori Ai Hammi is essentially the same as the defenses in the Ushiro series. These are Ushiro Ikkyo, Ushiro Arm Down and Ushiro Shiho Nage.

Katate Tori Gyaku Gamae is the form of Grab and Stab discussed in this section.

  1. Fig. 1 shows the start with Uke's left hand grabbing Nage's right wrist.
  2. Fig. 2 shows Uke pulling Nage in and stabbing Nage. The stab can be to any part of Nage.
