Arm Up Change

Example 1, Arm Up To Arm Down, Ikkyo.

  1. Fig. 1 shows the start position for a Shomen Uchi to get into the Ikkyo.
  2. Fig. 2 shows the end of the 1st Irimi Step with Nage's lead leg and Nage is contacting the striking arm with Ikkyo.
  3. Fig. 3 shows the point just before Nage changes from the Ikkyo grip to the Arm Down grip.
  4. In Fig. 4 Nage has just taken the Arm Down grip.

5. Fig. 5 shows the Arm Down. From here Nage can do any technique that is done from Arm Down.

Example 2, Arm Up To Arm Down.

This change was done using Sankyo but it could have also been done with the same way with Ikkyo, Nikkyo or Yankyo.

  1. Fig. 6 shows the start position for a Shomen Uchi to get into the Arm Up.
  2. Fig. 7 shows the end of the 1st Irimi Step with Nage's lead leg and Nage is contacting the striking arm with Ikkyo.
  3. Fig. 8 shows the end of the 2nd Irimi Step. Nage's grip is shifting to Sankyo.
  4. In Fig. 9 Nage has cut Uke down and is about to come to the Arm Up position.

  5. In Fig. 10 Nage lifts Uke's arm up to a Sankyo Up position.
  6. In Fig. 11 Nage's left hand goes to Uke's elbow to start circling Uke's arm back and down.
  7. Fig. 12 shows Nage circling Uke's arm back and down.
  8. In Fig. 13 Nage has circled Uke's arm down and brought it between Uke and Nage as in a normal Arm Down Irimi.

9. Fig. 14 shows Nage taking the arm down grip.
10. Fig. 15 shows the Arm Down after the 2nd Irimi Step. From here Nage can do any technique that is done from Arm Down.

Example 3, Arm Up To Arm Down, Nikkyo.

  1. Fig. 16 shows the start position for a Shomen Uchi to get into the Nikkyo.
  2. Fig. 17 shows the end of the 1st Irimi Step with Nage's lead leg and Nage is contacting the striking arm with Ikkyo.
  3. Fig. 18 shows the end of the 2nd Irimi Step. Nage's grip has shifted to Nikkyo.
  4. In Fig. 19 Nage has applied the Nikkyo arm lock.

5. In Fig. 20 Nage has taken a Tenkan Step and taken the arm down grip.
6. Fig. 21 shows Nage in the Tornado Twist applying the Arm Down. From here Nage can do any technique that is done from Arm Down.
