Tanto Yokomen Gokyo

Reference: Gokyo

Example 1, Tanto Yokomen Gokyo Irimi

Movie of Tanto Yokomen Gokyo Irimi.

Fig. 1 Start Fig. 2 Yokomen Uchi Fig. 3 Kuta Punch Fig. 4 Change Sides

  1. Fig. 1 shows the start with the spacing such that Uke's extended knife and Nage's extended arm do not quite touch.
  2. Fig. 2 shows Uke's right hand striking at Nage with Yokomen Uchi. The Tanto is held as shown because this is more difficult to defend against. Nage has started moving in and Knee Pop Stomp is very important here!
  3. Fig. 3 shows Nage striking Uke's face. Nage's left hand is under Uke's upper arm. Pushing Uke's head back causes Uke's arm to move up. Nage's left hand mostly guides Uke's right arm.
  4. In Fig. 4 Nage has taken Uke's right arm over Nage's head and Nage is taking the Gokyo grip. This is a variation on Ikkyo necessary to prevent Nage's hand being cut.

5. In Fig. 5 Nage has just taken the 2nd Irimi step and Uke is falling. From here Nage would finish with a technique as shown in the Tanto Tsuki Ikkyo series.

Example 2, Tanto Yokomen Gokyo Tenkan

Movie of Tanto Yokomen Gokyo Tenkan.

Fig. 6 Start Fig. 7 Kuta Punch Fig. 8 Bend Arm Fig. 9 Take Grip

  1. Fig. 6 shows the start with the spacing such that Uke's extended knife and Nage's extended arm do not quite touch.
  2. Fig. 7 shows Uke's right hand striking at Nage with Yokomen Uchi. The Tanto is held as shown because this is more difficult to defend against. Nage is striking toward Uke's face.
  3. In Fig. 8 Nage's left arm is yielding and bending under Uke's strike so that Nage's elbow comes out on Uke's back side. Nage was too late to strike Uke's face so Nage's arm lifts Uke's arm as Nage's arm goes under Uke's arm.
  4. In Fig. 9 Nage has changed to Uke's back side and Uke has taken the Gokyo grip. This is an Ikkyo variation necessary to prevent Nage's hand from being cut.

5. Fig. 10 shows the end of the 2nd Tenkan Step. From here Nage would finish with a technique as shown in the Tanto Tsuki Ikkyo series.
