Mat Techniques

Kesa Gatame Comments

Nage usually starts to off balance Uke using either the Bridge or the Walk. When this happens Uke will try to move with Nage to maintain control. Nage cannot usually stop Uke's movement so a common strategy is for Nage to reverse. This creates opposite pairs. Techniques that work when Nage is moving away from Uke and Techniques that work when Nage is moving towards Uke.

  1. Roll Back and Over Head work when Nage is moving away from Uke.

  2. Roll Over works when Nage and Uke move toward each other.

  3. Pull Free is different. It works when Uke does not get good control of Nage's arm. Uke releases the arm to attack. Or, Nage bridges Uke off balance to the point that Uke has to release the arm to keep from falling over.
