Kesa Gatame Over Head

Roll Back and Over Head compliment the Kesa Gatame Roll Over. If Uke moves away from Nage the Roll Back and Over Head tend to be easier, if Uke moves toward Nage the Roll Over tends to be easier.

These are practiced without using pressure points. Uke should move because of Nage's technique and not because of pain. If Nage can get to Uke's face Nage has many options to cause pain or serious injury.

Example 1, Kesa Gatame Over Head.

Movie of Kesa Gatame Over Head.

Fig. 1 Start Fig. 2 Bridge

  1. Fig. 1 shows the start of Kesa Gatame. This move is easier if Uke's legs are near Nage's head. The style where Uke holds Uke's knee works well.
  2. In Fig. 2 Nage bridges pushing Uke into Uke's weak balance point.

Fig. 3 Roll Over Fig. 4 Turn Over

  3. In Fig. 3 Nage continues bridging and turns to Nage's right carrying Uke over Nage's head.
  4. In Fig. 4 Nage continues turning over.

Example 2, Kesa Gatame Above Head.

The Above Head is important to practice to develop skill in Walking and understanding how Uke's balance works.
