Mat Techniques

Hara Gatame

Hara Gatame is a Judo arm bar that frequently includes a choke as done here.

Movie of Hara Gatame.

CHOKES ARE DANGEROUS. SEE THE CHOKE WARNING.

Fig. 1 Start Fig. 2 Strike Fig. 3 2nd Strike

  1. Fig. 1 shows the start position. Uke and Nage are spaced so that the fingers of their extended lead arms do not quite touch.
  2. Fig. 2 shows Nage striking towards Uke's face to get Uke's arm to raise. This enables Nage to grab Uke's wrist.
  3. Fig. 3 shows Nage striking Uke in the head. This makes it difficult for Uke to punch Nage as Nage attacks. It also weakens Uke so that the technique will be more effective.

Fig. 4 Grab Neck Fig. 5 Grab Collar Fig. 6 Choke

  4. In Fig. 4 Nage's arm goes around Uke's neck.
  5. Fig. 5 shows Nage continuing the Tornado Twist and bringing Uke down so that Nage can grab Uke's collar.
  6. In Fig. 6 Nage has reversed the Tornado Twist to apply the choke. Nage's body pushes against Uke's arm and shoulder. At the same time Nage pulls back on Uke's collar and wrist. This applies an arm bar and a choke at the same time. The only difference between this and Ushiro Kubi Shime is that Nage keeps Uke bent down. Ushiro Kubi Shime is not usually as hard to counter as Hara Gatame. It is also safer because Uke is in more of a standing position.
