Mat Techniques

Top Mount Stab Bridge

Reference: Bridge

Movie of Top Mount Stab Bridge.

This is a technique from Gene Simco.

Fig. 1 Start Fig. 2 Stabilize wrist Fig. 3 Grab Blade

  1. In Fig. 1 Uke has a Top Mount on Nage and is stabbing Nage.
  2. In Fig. 2 Nage grabs Uke's wrist as the hand comes down and redirects the strike.
  3. Fig. 3 shows Nage grabbing the knife blade with Nage's free hand. This is both a Kuta and a Simco technique. It is not the most desirable technique but in this case the standard Aikido and Kuta techniques are not practical. Experimentation will show that one can grip a knife without being cut if the knife does not slide in Nage's hand. It the knife slides even a little it will really cut.

Fig. 4 Bridge Fig. 5 Get Knife

  4. In Fig. 4 Nage Bridges and rotates the knife counterclockwise around Uke's right forearm. This throws Uke off to Nage's left shoulder diagonal.
  5. Fig. 5 shows Nage coming up to Nage's knees and removing the knife from Uke's hand.

    Fig. 6 Stab Uke

  6. Fig. 6 shows that Nage has taken the handle of the knife in Nage's left hand and stabbed Uke. In Aiki one prefers a less lethal finish but in this case Nage is not in a great position and this is available.
